60,000 Square Feet
Epoxy terrazzo, 2004
While on many levels, all airports are similar as dictated by the technical realities of passenger flow, baggage handling, security, etc., the memorable airports around the world distinguish themselves as unique places by connecting the buildings to what is unique about their respective regions.
Located on three floors of the rental car facility (RAC) at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Internation Airport, Mangrove Islands depicts a view of the indigenous mangrove island, once prevalent in South Florida and still exists in the vicinity of the airport. The multi floor design of the RAC Facility offers the opportunity to present the theme in a unique way by slicing the mangrove island into three horizontal sections, thereby presenting the very unusual view of an otherwise familiar, and, even over familiar image of South Florida. Each floor uses custom mixes of epoxy terrazzo with unusual aggregates including crushed mirrors, mother-of-pearl, and pieces of threaded rod.
