Terrazzo: Cement, Glass, Marble, Epoxy. 2000
A collaboration with the architect and exhibit designer of the South Carolina Aquarium, Terra Firma, was designed to express the primary programmatic concern of the entire project upon the first step taken inside the front door. The terrazzo floor, which depicts an undulating coastline of South Carolina, showing rivers and barrier islands, establishes the fundamental relationship between water and land. The water portion, made of epoxy based terrazzo with clear and colored glass, is highly reflective of the south facing light showing depth of ocean, current, and schools of fish made from mother-of-pearl chips. In stark contrast to the water is the textured, matte finished land. The primary message is that there is an inextricable relationship between land and water, which is explained in various details throughout the exhibit experience.
