CITIZEN

Nashville, TN

Stainless, glass, concrete, LED lights, 2010

Commissioned by Metro Arts Commission, City of Nashville

The concept of this new work in Nashville's Public Square is that of two citizens having a conversation. They converse with each other as well as with the public. Citizen attempts to fit into the formality of this important civic space; but in a way which might beckon the public into the park, add something whimsical, and even playful where art invites human interaction. The public is invited to turn the stainless steel wheel and continuously reorient the direction of the pointing gesture expressed by the two glass torsos: one male, one female. The spirit of the piece comes from the history of Nashville and the leaders who have pointed the way. The two founders of the city pointed to the site where the city took hold. Others have pointed the way as the city developed and grew. Many pointed the way providing economic, political, and cultural leadership. The city continues to point the way in music, publishing, and education, just to name a few. Pointing is civic participation. Glass fabricated by AGA, Louisville, KY
