WORLD WALL

Raleigh, North Carolina

8,000 SF / 1.1 million marbles
Stainless steel, glass beads, 1999

The Marbles Kids Museum (formerly Exploris) and IMAX Theater is a unique public/private partnership between Wake County and a non-profit children's museum. The original museum developed out of an existing North Carolina State carpentry warehouse and was designed to be a children's museum about the world. The World Wall, a graphic of the view of earth from space, covers the exterior of the large windowless black box exhibit space by using 1.1 million glass marbles held in a stainless steel armature. This collaborative integrated art project provides not only the exterior surface, but reveals the mission of the museum to drivers on their way through Raleigh.
